Senator Frist has announced that after a remarkable week honoring the life of President Reagan the Senate will adjourn until Monday, June 14th at 1:00.  He commented that any sign of partisanship has been forgotten this week as members of both parties have paid tribute to the life od President Reagan.

Senator Lieberman said that he is honored to rise today to pay tribute to the life of Ronald Reagan.  Although he said he did not know the President well, he said that they did have one remarkable rendezvous.  On January 14th 1989 when the President was set to give his weekly radio address Senator Lieberman was asked to give the Democratic response.  He noted that in his response he advocated that the American people must work on the unfinished business of ending Communism.  The Senator concluded by saying the President's eternal optimism served out country well.

Senator Lautenberg of New Jersey is speaking on the floor about the life of President Reagan.  The Senator recalled that he had the opportunity to work with the President on a number of occasions, including the effort to increase the drinking age to 21.  Remarking that he had just returned from France on a trip to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day, the Senator noted that we will never forget the words of President Reagan on the 40th anniversary of that day.

Senator Craig is paying tribute to the life of Ronald Reagan.  He is recalling that when he was elected to the Senate that his first office in the Hart Building had a giant map of the U.S.S.R in it, and how he looked at that map and said, "Thank you Ronald Reagan, for making the Soviet Union obsolete."  He concluded by saying that he will mourn the loss of Ronald Reagan, but more importantly he will celebrate his record, the history that will be written about him and his legacy.

In a rare floor appearance, Senator Peter Fitzgerald is speaking on the floor to pay tribute to the life of Ronald Reagan.  He noted that President Reagan is the only President ever born in the state of Illinois.  Senator Fitzgerald recalled the debate before the New Hampshire primary in which President Reagan grabbed the microphone and stated "I paid for this microphone," and made sure that his other competitors were allowed to speak.

Senator Carper of Delaware is speaking of his first recollection of President Reagan on the television show "Death Valley Days."  The Senator noted that the President came across as a sincere, warm and amiable man.  The Senator continued by saying in person, the President exhibited the same personal attributes that were seen in his acting and television appearances.  Senator Carper also said that whether you liked the President's policies or not, it was hard not to like him.  Referencing the ideas that some legislators have proposed about how to pay tribute the President, Senator Carper said that we could do much more in honoring his legacy by finding a cure to Alzheimer's disease, a disease the President suffered through.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is speaking about President Reagan coming into office when our country was in a time of dispair and giving us hope for the future.

Saying that the best way to pay tribute to President Reagan is to celebrate his life, Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa is speaking in honor of President Reagan and is thanking Nancy Reagan for all the work she has done surrounding Alzheimer's Disease.

The Senate having adopted S.Res.373 98-0, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is now talking about President Reagan's leadership in ending the Cold War and in "emancipating 600 million lives." He is concluding with saying that he will miss President Reagan's sense of humor.

Senator Bob Graham of Florida spoke about the dealings he had with President Reagan concerning education policy and concluded with offering his condolences to the family of President Reagan, especially his wife.

Beginning with saying how much he has appreciated the eloquence of the personal memories offered by his colleagues concerning President Reagan, Senator Jim Talent Missouri is thanking his colleagues for being able to remember the late President's good qualities and to put aside differences that may have existed.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has come to the floor to talk about the effect that President Reagan had on her home state. Quoting from President Reagan's book, "Reagan, In His Own Hand," she is saying that the President asked himself if Alaska was going to be the country's largest state or the country's smallest state surrounded by the largest national park. She is thanking him for his leadership in making the land more accessible for economic development and for supporting the idea of drilling for oil in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge.

Joining his colleagues in talking about what a great communicator and humanitarian President Reagan was, Senator Craig Thomas of Wyoming is beginning with saying that our country has lost a great treasure. Saying that President Reagan will always been remembered for ending the Cold War and for his love of jelly beans, Senator Thomas is talking about how President Reagan was also a true cowboy.

Majority Leader Bill Frist is beginning today remembering the late President Reagan. Senator Bob Bennett is now talking about President Reagan and about when he applied to work on Reagan's campaign. Quoting Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler," Senator Bennett is saying that President Reagan knew "when to hold 'em" and knew "when to fold 'em" and that was what made him such a great leader.

The Senate convenes today at 9:30 to again pay tribute to the late President Ronald Reagan. The only vote today is scheduled to occur around 11:30 and will be to commemorate President Reagan.
