Senator Isakson of Georgia came to the Floor to propose an amendment to S. 2452, the Border Security bill. Senator Isakson stated that his amendment would create consequences for those who sneak over the border illegally while rewarding those who go through the proper channels to become legal immigrants. In presenting his amendment, Senator Isakson argued that it is currently easier to cross the border than to immigrate legally.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas just came to the Floor to discuss immigration reform. Senator Cornyn opposes amnesty and is opposed to the substitute amendment offered by Senator Specter to the Border Security bill. Senator Cornyn asserts that amnesty is a magnet for illegal immigrants. He argues that this Judiciary passed amendment creates a new path to citizenship for those who have entered this country in violation of our laws. Illegal immigrants should go through the same process as those who have come legally, the Senator stated. Senator Cornyn added that the Judiciary passed amendment sends the message that we can’t enforce our laws. He pointed out that he and Senator Kyl are working on legislation that would treat illegal immigrants no differently than people waiting outside our country to enter through legal channels.

Senator Frist just started the day off with some opening remarks about the Securing America’s Borders Act. He said illegal immigration is a growing problem. Senator Frist disagrees with what he called the amnesty approach because he believes that it undermines the securing of our borders and it becomes an incentive for more illegal immigrants to cross our borders. He wants the debate on immigration reform and border security to reflect the rule of law and to also honor our immigrant heritage.
