The Senate convened at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon with a vote scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the nomination of Francisco Augusto Besosa to be a judge for the U.S. District Court of Puerto Rico. For the rest of the week, an ambitious schedule is planned with the possibility of considering the border fencing bill, an NSA surveillance program bill, a terrorist tribunal bill, and the conference reports for the Defense and Homeland Security FY07 appropriations bills. This is the last week the Senate is expected to be in session until after the November elections.
In Committee work, the Judiciary Committee held a hearing this morning on habeas corpus review for Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, detainees. On Tuesday, the Committee will vote on the nomination of Terrence Boyle to be a federal appeals court judge for the 4th Circuit. The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will markup legislation on sanctions for Iran and Libya. Conference Committee members for the FY07 Homeland Security Department appropriations bill continue to work on the conference report.
