Senator Leahy has been a longtime advocate for open government and a champion of the Freedom of Information Act.  He is encouraged that President Obama has already shown a willingness to increase transparency and accountability in the nation's executive agencies.  Through his work on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Leahy worked to pass legislation to strengthen FOIA.  In 2007, Senator Leahy authored legislation to provide the first reforms to the Freedom of Information Act in more than a decade.
