Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist
1924-2005

“Tonight we learned the sad news of the passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who has served admirably on our highest court for 33 years — 19 as Chief Justice. My respects and my deepest sympathy go out to his family.

“Few Justices in the history of the Court have served longer than Chief Rehnquist. One of the hallmarks of his tenure was his tenacious fight to preserve the integrity and independence of our federal courts. His commitment to the Court and his passion for the law and for public service was extraordinary.

“I was privileged to have known the Chief Justice for many years and to have had the pleasure of serving with him on the Smithsonian Board of Regents. We also have shared a love for the beautiful land and the independent people of Vermont – a place that served as a special refuge for the Chief Justice and his family over the years.”

-Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, Ranking Member, Judiciary Committee
September 3, 2005
