Economic Stimulus Proposals
for 2008: An Analysis
February 8, 2008

The Congressional Research Service provides members of Congress with non-partisan research and analysis of legislation and issues.  It's my goal to make all of these reports available to the tax payer.  You can read more about my efforts here.  Until then, I've made the below reports available in PDF form to help you research this issue further.

Economic Stimulus Package

Since the signs are clear that our economy is in trouble, Sen. Leahy is pleased that Congress recently passed, and the President signed on February 13, 2008, a stimulus bill that will help hardworking Vermonters who are struggling with the high costs of gas, health care, and groceries. In order to jumpstart our slowing economy and create jobs here at home, the stimulus bill will:

  • Give hundreds of dollars to more than 130 million Americans, including seniors and disabled veterans;

  • Build on the child tax credit by offering a one-time rebate of $300 per child;

  • Expand financing opportunities for Americans in danger of losing their homes because of the mortgage crisis; and

  • Promote small business investment in plants and equipment.

These are timely, temporary, and targeted stimulus measures that will strengthen the economy by boosting consumer demand, promoting economic growth, and creating jobs.
