Reaction to FDA Announcement of Advisory on Mercury-Contaminated Fish
January 12, 2001
FDA has finally acknowledged what the scientific community has known about the
dangers of mercury-contaminated fish to pregnant women and young children.
While I am disappointed that the agency has not yet updated their
methylmercury action level, this consumer warning is a step in the right
direction. The public has a right to know what is in the food they eat.
The agency still needs to resume mercury testing of domestically-caught
seafood. I will continue to press the agency to ensure the highest standards
of public health.
