Indonesia and East
Timor
I have
long been involved with the situation in East
Timor, and as Chairman of the Foreign Operations
Subcommittee, I worked to ensure that $50 million over the
past two years went to promote democracy, economic
development, and human rights in East Timor. In addition, I
have undertaken a number of different actions to hold
individuals accountable for their role in the atrocities in
East Timor following the 1999 referendum on independence.
For example, I sponsored an amendment to the Foreign
Operations Appropriations bill, which was accepted and
enacted into law, that suspends military assistance to the
Indonesian Government until it takes certain steps to bring
individuals to justice. You can link to these conditions
below.
I have
joined other Senators in co-sponsoring legislation and
writing letters in support of East
Timor, some of which you can access on this page. |
