Under the provisions of the Constitution, one of the most important roles of the United States Senate is to advise and consent to presidential nominations. The Senate Judiciary Committee considers both executive nominations and judicial nominations, and as Chairman of the Committee Senator Leahy plays an important role in the nominations process. Nominations that fall under the jurisdiction of the Judiciary Committee include nominations to the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the U.S. District Courts, and the Court of International Trade, as well as several executive nominations within the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce and others.
