The Focus of Today's Session will be
S.1072, the Highway Funding Bill

12:30 P.M.

Majority Leader First is summarizing the events of this past week but also discussing blood pressure and hypertension since February is American Heart Month. He is urging those listening to get their blood pressure checked, since "hypertension is the silent killer." Senator Frist concluded with saying that the Senate stands in adjournment until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 9, at which point consideration of the Highway Funding bill will resume.

11:30 A.M.

Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey is discussing the importance of passing S.1072, the Highway Funding bill. Senator Lautenberg is a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the committee with jurisdiction over highway safety.

10:40 A.M.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas is speaking on the floor as if in a period of morning business about same sex marriage and the recent ruling in Massachusetts. Senator Cornyn is discussing the role of courts and decisions he perceives as "against common sense," citing both the ruling in Massachusetts and a previous ruling concerning the Pledge of Allegiance.

9:30 A.M.

The Senate begins today with a period of morning business prior to resuming consideration of S.1072, the Highway Funding bill. Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee is speaking on the floor about a range of issues, including the letter sent to his office which contained the toxin ricin.
