The Focus of Today's Session will be Class Action

                   7:00 P.M.

After agreeing to two more amendments to the CAN-SPAM Act, #1894 offered by Senator Santorum and #1896 offered by Senator Corzine, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 97-0.

                   5:30 P.M.

Earlier this evening additional amendments to the CAN-SPAM Act were agreed to by a voice vote, including the Hatch-Leahy amendment #1893 and the Harkin amendment #1895.  The Senate will shortly be considering an amendment from Senator Corzine and is expected to hold a final vote on the CAN-SPAM Act soon afterward.

                   3:30 P.M.

The Senate has changed focus and is now debating S.877, the CAN-SPAM Act.  This bill would impose regulations and penalties on sending unsolicited commercial email.  Senator Wyden and Senator Schumer each proposed amendments, #1891 and #1892 respectively, which were accepted by voice vote.  Senator Wyden's amendment will prohibit the transmission of false or misleading information and Senator Schumer's amendment will authorize the establishment of a "Do-Not-Email" registry.

                   1:00 P.M.

The Senate has just completed the roll call vote on the Class Action Reform bill with a tally of 59 in favor and 39 opposed. Because three fifths of the Senate did not vote in favor of ending debate on the Class Action Reform bill, the motion to invoke cloture failed.  Majority leader Frist announced that the Senate will take up Anti-Spam legislation around 2:00.

                   12:00 P.M.

Throughout the morning a number of Senators, including Senator Leahy, have come to the floor to make statements regarding the Class Action Reform bill. Click here for text of Senator Leahy's statement.  A roll call vote on the motion to invoke cloture will be held at 12:30.

                   9:30 A.M.

It is a beautiful fall day in Washington, DC as the Senate opens with a period of morning business prior to continuing the debate of Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa's S.1751, the Class Action Reform bill.
