The Focus of Today's Session will be Class Action

After agreeing to two
more amendments to the CAN-SPAM Act,
#1894 offered by
Senator Santorum and
#1896 offered by
Senator Corzine, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 97-0.

P.M.
Earlier this evening
additional amendments to the CAN-SPAM Act were agreed to by a
voice vote, including the
Hatch-Leahy amendment
#1893 and the
Harkin amendment #1895.
The Senate will shortly be considering an amendment from Senator Corzine
and is expected to hold a final vote on the CAN-SPAM Act soon afterward.

P.M.
The Senate has changed
focus and is now debating
S.877, the CAN-SPAM
Act. This bill would impose regulations and penalties on sending
unsolicited commercial email.
Senator Wyden and Senator Schumer each proposed amendments,
#1891 and
#1892
respectively, which were accepted by voice vote. Senator Wyden's
amendment will prohibit the transmission of false or misleading
information and Senator Schumer's amendment will authorize the
establishment of a "Do-Not-Email" registry.

P.M.
The Senate has just completed
the roll call vote on the Class Action Reform bill with a tally of 59 in
favor and 39 opposed. Because three fifths of the Senate did not vote in
favor of ending debate on the Class Action Reform bill, the motion to
invoke cloture failed. Majority leader Frist announced that the
Senate will take up Anti-Spam legislation around 2:00.

P.M.
Throughout the morning a
number of Senators, including Senator Leahy, have come to the floor to
make statements regarding the Class Action Reform bill. Click
