Jeffords, Leahy Statement On Farm
Bill Vote
U.S. Sens. Jim Jeffords (I-Vt.) and Patrick Leahy
(D-Vt.) released the following statement today in response to the
Senate’s failure to move forward with a vote on the Farm Bill. Both
Jeffords and Leahy voted in support of cloture, which would have ended
a filibuster on the bill.
"We are extremely disappointed that some of our
colleagues do not recognize the need to help our farmers. However, we
view today’s action as a delay and not a defeat. This bill will be
back before us when we return in January, and we will do everything
within our means to see that it passes at that time. Let’s get
beyond the blame game and pass a Farm Bill that will assure dairy
farmers that they will be paid a fair price for their milk. This month
alone, dairy payments to farmers in Vermont have dropped dramatically.
Quite literally, they cannot afford any more delay."
