Leahy And Jeffords Secure $3.6 Million
For New Burlington Transit Center
(Sept. 16) – Burlington will receive $3.6 million
from the U.S. Department of Transportation to build a new Burlington
transit center along the city’s waterfront, Senators Patrick Leahy and
Jim Jeffords announced Monday. Leahy and Jeffords secured the funds
in earlier federal transportation budget bills.
“The Transit Center is another important piece in
the development of Burlington’s waterfront,” said Leahy, who is a
senior member of the Appropriations Committee and its Subcommittee on
Transportation, which handled the legislation. “It will help
invigorate the waterfront and make it more accessible, and it will
ease downtown congestion, and all of those things are good for
Burlington.”
"Projects like this help strengthen our
communities, while offering more choices to those who use our public
transportation system," said Sen. Jeffords, who is the chairman of the
Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. "Once again, Vermont is
proving to be a model for how to do it right."
The transit center will be the nexus for commuter
rail lines and CCTA bus service. The facility also will accommodate
local and intercity buses and provide for taxi, bicycle and pedestrian
amenities. The center will also be located near the ferry to
Plattsburgh, N.Y.
