Comments Of
Sen. Patrick Leahy
About The Death Of Pat Barr,
Nationally Acclaimed Advocate
For Breast Cancer Research
Thurs., June 19, 2003
“Pat Barr personified grace, brilliance,
tenacity and beauty. She was a loving mother and wife, she was a
brilliant lawyer, and she took the notion of advocacy to new heights.
“One of my lasting memories of Pat is
seeing her standing in the hallway, well past
midnight, patiently
explaining to individual senators why the Department of Defense should
include funds for breast cancer research in its medical budget.
Hundreds of millions of dollars of breast cancer research followed in
her wake. That is the reward that the nation – and especially the
nation’s women and their families – reaped from her persistence.
“Just as we mourn the passing of our
beloved friend, let us celebrate the lives that her tireless work will
no doubt save -- women around the country who will never know of the
pioneering work of this great, compassionate and visionary Vermonter.”
