Leahy Nominates 31 Outstanding Young Vermonters
To U.S. Service Academies

…Waterbury and Burlington Youths Offered Spots At U.S. Naval Academy

BURLINGTON, Vt. (Tues., Dec. 23) – Sen. Patrick Leahy Tuesday announced he has nominated 31 young Vermonters for appointments to the United States Service Academies.  Two of his nominees, Joseph Leavitt of Burlington and Margaret Gould of Waterbury, have received unusually early offers from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., a sign that they are extraordinary candidates.

By obtaining a congressional nomination from Leahy, nominees are now eligible for appointments to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo., or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.  Those who are offered an appointment by an academy will receive full scholarships and graduate as commissioned officers in the military.  The nominees are:

Nominees who receive academy appointments will enter the class of 2008, which begins during the summer of 2004.  Vermonters can find out more about obtaining service academy nominations by contacting Senator Leahy's Burlington office at 1-800-642-3193 (or 802-863-2525).  Applications for the class of 2009 will be available in January 2004.  The deadline for completed application materials is December 1, 2004.
