Reaction Of Sen. Patrick
Leahy (D-Vt.),
Ranking Democratic Member, Senate Judiciary Committee,
To The President’s Recess Appointment
Of William Pryor To The 11th Circuit Court Of Appeals
Fri., Feb. 20, 2004
“The President has divided the
American people and the Senate with his controversial judicial
nominees, and none is more controversial than Mr. Pryor. Judicial
activists like Mr. Pryor are committed to an ideological agenda that
puts corporate interests over the public’s interests and that would
roll back the hard-won rights of consumers, minorities, women, and
Americans with disabilities.
“Millions of jobless Americans wish
the President cared as much about creating jobs for them as he does
about going to these extreme lengths to create a good job for Mr.
Pryor.
“Actions like this show the American
people that this White House will stop at nothing to try to turn the
independent federal judiciary into an arm of the Republican Party.
Doing this further erodes the White House’s credibility and the
respect that the American people have for the courts. The White
House has announced both recess appointments to the courts on
Fridays, when they believe fewer Americans will notice. This time,
the American people are watching.”
