Leahy Calls On Rumsfeld To Release
Reported Guantanamo Bay Videos Of Alleged Abuse

May 17, 2004

The Honorable Donald H. Rumsfeld
Secretary of Defense
U.S.
Department of Defense
Washington, D.C. 20301

Dear Secretary Rumsfeld:

Last week, my staff requested that the Department of Defense provide to the appropriate committees of Congress any materials regarding treatment of detainees at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  This request included any guidelines, procedures, or physical evidence—such as photos or videotapes—pertaining to the detainees.  In light of the attached article in yesterday’s Observer, I reiterate my request that you provide to the appropriate committees of Congress, including the Armed Services Committee and the Appropriations Committee, all of the videotapes, and any other photographic evidence, documenting the actions of the “emergency response forces” at Guantanamo.

Given the urgency of this matter, I request that these tapes be submitted to the Committees noted above by May 24, 2004.

Sincerely,

PATRICK LEAHY
United States Senator
