Reaction Of Sen. Patrick Leahy,
Ranking Member, Senate Judiciary Committee,
To White House Release
Of Certain Documents
Relating To The Prison Abuse Scandal
Tuesday, June 22, 2004

“The Administration has made it a practice to deny oversight cooperation to Congress.  The stonewalling in the prison abuse scandal has been building to a crisis point.  Now, responding to public pressure, the White House has released a small subset of the documents that offers glimpses into the genesis of this scandal.  All should have been provided earlier to Congress, and much more remains held back and hidden away from public view.

“Though this is a self-serving selection, at least it is a beginning.  But for the Judiciary Committee and the Senate to find the whole truth, we will need much more cooperation and extensive hearings.

“Water flows downhill, and so does government policy.  Somewhere in the upper reaches of this administration, a process was set in motion that seeped forward until it produced this scandal.  To put this scandal behind us, first we need to understand what happened.  And we can’t get to the bottom of this until there is a clear picture of what happened at the top.

“We will keep the pressure on until we get honesty and answers.”
