Leahy Announces $1.3 Million That He
Secured
For Bellows Falls Transportation Center
(Tuesday, Aug. 31) -- Senator Patrick Leahy
announced Tuesday that the Town of Rockingham will receive $1.3 million
to design and build the first phase of the new Bellows Falls Multimodal
Transportation Center. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations
Committee, Leahy secured these funds, now being released by the Federal
Transit Administration, in an earlier transportation appropriations
bill.
“The
transportation hub fits right in with the progress Bellows Falls is
making on several fronts,” said Leahy. “The community has worked hard
to move this project along, and it will be part and parcel of the
downtown revitalization that’s well underway.”
The
transportation center will be located on the “Island” in Bellows Falls
at the historic Union Station. It will become a transportation hub for
the community by providing access to Amtrak and Green Mountain Railroad
trains, intercity and local public transit bus service, taxis, local
bikepaths, and a park-and-ride lot.
Located across the street from the transportation center is the new
Bellows Falls Connecticut River Scenic Byway Waypoint Interpretive
Center. The Waypoint Center offers services to visitors, including
history and travel information about the village and surrounding
communities in Vermont and New Hampshire. The two new centers together
will attract more visitors to the area and help enhance the economic
vitality of Bellows Falls.
