Of Gov. Mike Johanns To Be Secretary Of Agriculture

"I congratulate Governor Johanns
on his nomination to be the next Secretary of Agriculture. I am especially
encouraged by his dairy background, and I hope his knowledge of the
problems facing dairy farmers will make him a strong partner in fulfilling
President Bush's commitment to extend the Milk Income Loss Compensation (MILC)
program next year.
"Governor Johanns will have
serious challenges ahead of him, including proposed agricultural budget
cuts, preparations for the reauthorization of the Farm Bill, and
maintaining strong standards in the successful new organic standards and
labeling program. These are additional issues that we will explore with
him during our committee's confirmation hearing for his nomination. His
knowledge and experience can be useful in meeting these challenges, and I
am hopeful about the progress we can make by working together."
