Comment Of Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.),
Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee,
On Audit Of Department Of Justice Key Indicators
March 26, 2008
“The Inspector General’s findings echo the concerns I and others in
Congress have been raising for years. Nearly half of the reporting
components at the Department failed to fully and accurately report
data on the Department’s performance in such key areas as countering
terrorism and cyber crime and enforcing civil rights.
“The inability of the Justice Department to provide complete
information for their own internal audit leads again to concern
about the quality of information the Department provides to
Congress. How can we know what they are doing if they themselves do
not know? After the complete turnover of the leadership ranks at
the Department after the scandals of the Gonzales era, the Inspector
General’s report demonstrates how far we still need to go to restore
accountability and to get our top law enforcement agency back on
track. This is fresh evidence of the importance of vigorous
congressional oversight.”
