Witnesses To Testify Before Leahy Panel
Hearing On
Problems Facing Homeless And Runaway Youths
WASHINGTON (Wednesday, April 23, 2008) – Senate
Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) will hold a
hearing April 29 on Capitol Hill to examine the problems facing
homeless and runaway youths today, and has invited testimony from
representatives of Vermont’s
Spectrum Youth and Family Services, a non-profit agency founded
in 1970 to assist Vermont youth and Families.
Spectrum’s Executive Director, Mark Redmond, will testify about the
organization’s unique and successful program,
Spectrum One Stop. The first shelter of its kind in Vermont,
Spectrum One Stop helps provide food, shelter, clothing and health
care to homeless and runaway youths. Redmond will be joined by
Michael Hutchins, a former homeless youth from Burlington, Vt., who
now works at the Spectrum Youth Co-Op, a subsidiary of Spectrum
Youth and Family Services.
The Committee will also hear from Victoria Wagner, the chief
executive office for the
National Network for Youth, a national advocacy organization for
runaway and homeless youth based in Washington, D.C.
The
April 29 hearing, “Living on the Street: Finding Solutions to
Protect Runaway and Homeless Youth,” will launch Leahy’s efforts to
reauthorize the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act. Leahy is expected
to introduce reauthorization language in the coming weeks.
The hearing will be held Tuesday, April 29, at 10 a.m. in Room 226
of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, in Washington.
