Burlington Waterfront Improvements
Prepare Waterfront For Quad Celebration
…$2.7 M In Leahy-Secured Grants Used to
Improve Waterfront Access
BURLINGTON, Vt. (Monday, June 15) – U.S. Sen. Patrick
Leahy (D-Vt.), Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss and members of Burlington’s
business community marked the completion of new public restrooms, a
visitor center, additional parking for tour buses and traffic flow
improvements on Burlington’s Waterfront during a Monday morning news
conference outside the new visitor center adjacent to the Pease parking
lot.
The $2.7 million in federal grants used to fund
construction were secured by Leahy in the 2005 federal transportation
authorization bill. The improvements, officially completed Monday,
mark the first phase of traffic, pedestrian and bicycle access
improvements on the waterfront. Additional construction will occur
this fall, after the busy summer season and the events commemorating the
Quadricentennial celebration of Samuel de Champlain.
“Bold vision and leadership over the past two decades
have turned old warehouses, a power plant, and a grain silo into parks,
a science center, a maritime museum, and a sailing center,” said Leahy.
“Today, we continue cultivating this public space so that more people
can conveniently access it and enjoy it. These improvements will
be especially helpful this summer, as we draw people to the waterfront
to celebrate the Quadricentennial celebration of Samuel de Champlain’s
voyage to Lake Champlain.”
“The improvements and amenities completed this spring
on Burlington’s waterfront represent a responsible investment of public
funds to better serve the needs of people who live in and visit the
City,” said Kiss. The accessibility of Burlington’s waterfront is
an asset that we should all appreciate and enjoy.”
