$52 Million In
Education Funds Now Available For Vermont
WASHINGTON, July 27 – More than $52 million in
stimulus funds are available for Vermont for education reform and to
help save teaching jobs jeopardized by state and local budget cuts,
Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Peter
Welch (D-Vt.) announced today.
Vermont will be eligible
to apply for another $25 million this fall.
“The $52 million
Vermont
will receive today is part of the single largest boost in education
funding in recent history,” said U. S. Secretary of Education Arne
Duncan. “Vermont can now utilize
these funds to save jobs and lay the groundwork for a generation of
education reform.”
Vermont earlier this year
received nearly $46 million in additional stimulus funds for elementary
and secondary education programs.
In order to receive today’s funds, Vermont provided
assurances that it will collect, publish, analyze and act on basic
information regarding the quality of classroom teachers, annual student
improvements, college readiness, the effectiveness of state standards
and assessments, and progress on turning around underperforming schools.
States also are required by the Department of
Education to report the number of jobs saved through the economic
recovery act, the amount of state and local tax increases averted and
how funds are used.
