Applying for a Nomination

1. Contact the U.S. Service Academies that interest you and find out more about their specific eligibility requirements. You MUST contact an Academy directly to initiate the admissions process. This is IN ADDITION to the Congressional nomination process.

2. To be considered for a nomination by Sen. Leahy, complete the attached application and return it to Sen. Leahy’s Montpelier office, along with a letter explaining why you wish to attend your chosen Academy or Academies and a list of your extracurricular activities. Applications are being accepted now through December 1, 2008 for the Class of 2013, which begins in June 2009.

3. Arrange for letters of recommendation from three individuals who are familiar with your accomplishments in school, extracurricular and/or community activities. Your references should write directly to Sen. Leahy at the address below. Also, list these individuals on your application.

4. Have your scores from either the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT-I) or American College Testing (ACT) sent to Sen. Leahy. For the SAT, choose code 0217 and the results will be sent directly to Sen. Leahy's office. On the ACT, choosing code 7000 will provide you with an extra copy that you can send in yourself.

5. Have your school send Sen. Leahy your transcript (including class rank, if available).

DEADLINE

Your application, cover letter, list of extracurricular activities, recommendations, test scores and transcript must be received in Sen. Leahy's Montpelier office no later than December 1, 2008 to be considered for a nomination to the class of 2013. NOTE: Our mail service is occasionally delayed by security precautions, so be sure to mail your application materials to the Montpelier office and call (802)229-0569 before December 1, 2008 to confirm that all have been received.

You may also fax application materials to: (802)229-1915, but originals, which are more legible, are preferred.
