Government Buildings

Bureau of Engraving and Printing:  14th and C Streets, SW, 202-874-3019  Right before their eyes, visitors to this building see sheets of paper turn into millions of U.S. dollars.  The Bureau is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Library of Congress:  First Street and Independence Avenue SE, 202-707-5000  Home to more than 75 million books, the Library of Congress also houses a world-renowned research center and special exhibitions, including a Gutenberg Bible.  The Library is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

The National Archives:  8th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW, 802-501-5000  At the National Archives, you'll see the Charters of Freedom exhibit which includes the original Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights.  The Archives are open daily, wish seasonal hours: The day after Labor Day through Mach 31, 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; April 1 through the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Pentagon:  Pentagon Metro Stop, Yellow and Blue Lines  A one and one half mile walking tour of the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, this tour is only available through congressional offices or for school groups.  The Pentagon is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The United States Capitol:  Between Constitution and Independence Avenues, 202-225-6827  Home to the United States Congress, the Capitol Building serves as both the seat of the legislative branch and a museum of American art and history visited by millions of people each year.

The United States Supreme Court:  First and East Capitol Streets, 202-479-3300  Behind the columns and facade of this building, parts of which are made of Vermont marble, the Supreme Court convenes beginning in October.  Here, visitors can tour the building, and listen to arguments made before the Court.

The White House:  1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, 202-456-7041  This self-guided tour includes the East Room, State Dining Room, Red, Green and Blue Rooms and the President's Library.  Also, stop by the White House Visitor Center on the southeast corner of 15th and E Streets to see exhibits on White House Architecture, Furnishings, first families, social events, and relations with the press and world leaders.  The Center is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
