Patrick LeahyCan you hear me back there?
Castleton Village SchoolSenator, chat is working but we are working on getting the projector to work.
Patrick LeahyDo you hear me Ted or just see the type message?
Patrick LeahyI can see you in front of a large screen.
Castleton Village SchoolI can not hear you Senator, however, I do see you. Could you pick the mike up and speak into it?
Patrick LeahyAre there any questions I could answer in the meantime?
Patrick LeahyI am told we cannot send sound. I can hear you but you can't hear me. Why doesn't someone ask a question and I will try to answer it by typing.
Patrick LeahyI can see you all
Patrick LeahyI saw the big waves!
Castleton Village SchoolSenator, we are good to go. The children say hello.
Patrick LeahyTed / I can hear you
Patrick LeahyCan you see me or my office
Castleton Village Schoolyes, I can, but the children can not.
Patrick LeahyTed would it better if i just turned off my camera and went to question and answer
Castleton Village SchoolLets go..
Castleton Village SchoolDarcie would like to know how would school vouchers affect them?
Patrick LeahyIn Castleton they would make little difference Darcie. They certainly would not give enough money to allow school choice for the average Vermonter. I would rather see us spend money to improve the schools we have.
Patrick LeahyOn the pictures I am seeing you look like a really neat class!
Castleton Village SchoolSenator, Matt would like to know how parental accountability is involved in the issue of education.
Patrick LeahyMatt parents have a great responsibility. They cannot expect the parents to take over their job - I felt when my children were young that I had a responsibility to make sure they were learning and that they were responsible in school.
Patrick LeahyTed we have time for one or two more questions
Castleton Village SchoolBrittany would like to know how elected officials can make schools safer?
Patrick LeahyBrittany in Vermont our schools are among the safest in the country. We do have to have common sense rules like no weapons in the schools and the school administrators need the flexibility to enforce discipline rules.
Castleton Village SchoolSenator, we just got the big screen working.
Patrick LeahyHi to everyone on the big screen - you look great on my screen!
Castleton Village SchoolThuy wants to know how you decide who to vote for.
Patrick LeahyNicole asked how long one can be a US Senator. It si 6 years at a time [2 years for Members of the House] and you can serve as long as you are reelected. Every state has 2 Senators no matter their size but they have different numbers of House members based on size [California has more than 60 - we have one]
Patrick LeahyThuy I study all the answers of the candidates and often know the candidates well. In this case i am voting for Al Gore. He and I, and our wives, have been friends for over 20 years and I think he is fully prepared to be President. I have worked on environmental issues with him and know he would protect our environment.
Castleton Village SchoolAnna would like to know how foreign policy affects children.
Castleton Village SchoolDo you have time to answer any more questions?
Patrick Leahy Anna we live in an interdependent world. What happens on the other side of the globe ranging from Ebola plague to war can effect us here at home. A large percentage of our jobs are involved in international trade [you are probably wearing clothes made overseas and those countries probably use computers with chips made in Vermont] so we have to be concerned with foreign affairs.
Patrick LeahyTime for one more before I have to go over to the Senate.
Castleton Village SchoolHow did the Civil Unions' bill pass in Vermont when most Vermont voters were against it?
Castleton Village SchoolThe class would like to know who the joker was.
Patrick LeahyCivil Unions was voted by the Vermont legislature. They were told by the Vermont Supreme Court that they had to either vote for same sex marriages or civil union. The legislature took what they thought was the more acceptable alternative . They are obliged to uphold the constitutional mandates of the court even when they are unpopular
Patrick LeahySome people come in and out of the picture here - there are a lot of people who work in my office!
Patrick LeahyI was trying to say goodbye but the audio seems to be off. I have enjoyed being with all of you and hope I can visit with you personally some time.
Castleton Village SchoolThank you for chatting with us. You have an open invitation.
