| Patrick Leahy | | | Can you hear me back there?
|
| Castleton Village School | | | Senator, chat is working but we are working on getting the projector to work. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Do you hear me Ted or just see the type message? |
| Patrick Leahy | | | I can see you in front of a large screen. |
| Castleton Village School | | | I can not hear you Senator, however, I do see you. Could you pick the
mike up and speak into it? |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Are there any questions I could answer in the meantime? |
| Patrick Leahy | | | I am told we cannot send sound. I can hear you but you can't hear me. Why
doesn't someone ask a question and I will try to answer it by typing. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | I can see you all |
| Patrick Leahy | | | I saw the big waves! |
| Castleton Village School | | | Senator, we are good to go. The children say hello. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Ted / I can hear you |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Can you see me or my office |
| Castleton Village School | | | yes, I can, but the children can not. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Ted would it better if i just turned off my camera and went to question and answer |
| Castleton Village School | | | Lets go.. |
| Castleton Village School | | | Darcie would like to know how would school vouchers affect them? |
| Patrick Leahy | | | In Castleton they would make little difference Darcie. They certainly would not give enough money to allow school choice for the average Vermonter. I would rather see us spend money to improve the schools we have. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | On the pictures I am seeing you look like a really neat class! |
| Castleton Village School | | | Senator, Matt would like to know how parental accountability is involved in the issue of education. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Matt parents have a great responsibility. They cannot expect the parents to take over their job - I felt when my children were young that I had a responsibility to make sure they were learning and that they were responsible in school. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Ted we have time for one or two more questions |
| Castleton Village School | | | Brittany would like to know how elected officials can make schools safer? |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Brittany in Vermont our schools are among the safest in the country. We do have to have common sense rules like no weapons in the schools and the school administrators need the flexibility to enforce discipline rules. |
| Castleton Village School | | | Senator, we just got the big screen working. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Hi to everyone on the big screen - you look great on my screen! |
| Castleton Village School | | | Thuy wants to know how you decide who to vote for. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Nicole asked how long one can be a US Senator. It si 6 years at a time [2 years for Members of the House] and you can serve as long as you are reelected. Every state has 2 Senators no matter their size but they have different numbers of House members based on size [California has more than 60 - we have one] |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Thuy I study all the answers of the candidates and often know the candidates well. In this case i am voting for Al Gore. He and I, and our wives, have been friends for over 20 years and I think he is fully prepared to be President. I have worked on environmental issues with him and know he would protect our environment. |
| Castleton Village School | | | Anna would like to know how foreign policy affects children. |
| Castleton Village School | | | Do you have time to answer any more questions? |
| Patrick Leahy | | |
Anna we live in an interdependent world. What happens on the other side of the globe ranging from Ebola plague to war can effect us here at home. A large percentage of our jobs are involved in international trade [you are
probably wearing clothes made overseas and those countries probably use computers with chips made in Vermont] so we have to be concerned with foreign affairs. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Time for one more before I have to go over to the Senate. |
| Castleton Village School | | | How did the Civil Unions' bill pass in Vermont when most Vermont voters were against it? |
| Castleton Village School | | | The class would like to know who the joker was. |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Civil Unions was voted by the Vermont legislature. They were told by the Vermont Supreme Court that they had to either vote for same sex marriages or civil union. The legislature took what they thought was the more acceptable alternative . They are obliged to uphold the constitutional mandates of the court even when they are unpopular |
| Patrick Leahy | | | Some people come in and out of the picture here - there are a lot of people who work in my office! |
| Patrick Leahy | | | I was trying to say goodbye but the audio seems to be off. I have enjoyed being with all of you and hope I can visit with you personally some time. |
| Castleton Village School | | | Thank you for chatting with us. You have an open invitation. |
