Hello Senator, We are the Stowe Elementary School Student
Council, and just like you, we were elected to our position. Sabrina
would like to know who you would like to see as our new President?
Sen Leahy:
hi - i can see you all and i just left the Senate floor - Sabrina
i am backing Barack Obama and i was just talking with him upstairs
Stowe Elementary:
Gabriela would like to know how can the government help to stop
global warming?
Sen Leahy:
Gabriela the govt can enter into treaties to lower greenhouse
emissions but it is also important that all of us do things to lower
emissions in our cars, use of energy and so forth
Stowe Elementary: Katelyn
would like to know if you have visited New Orleans since Hurricane
Katrina?
Sen Leahy:
Katelyn i have had people from my Committee go there and report
back to me. The recovery is terrible slow - the Department of Homeland
Security has shown great incompetence in the cleanup
Stowe Elementary: Sean would
you like to know if you have visited Stowe?
Sen Leahy:
Sean i live in Middlesex Vt and was born in Montpelier and i am
in Stowe many times every year from the time i was a child
Stowe Elementary: Devin
would like to know if you think having natural untouched grasslands is
important?
Sen Leahy:
Devin it would depend where it is e.g. in the Dakotas. Like
natural forestlands there are places where it is very important
Stowe Elementary: Margaux
would like to know what countries have not agreed to stop the use of
landmines?
Sen Leahy:
Margaux our own country has not stopped enough especially with
cluster mines. Others include Russia, China, Israel and some others.
Most other countries have signed the landmine treaty i supported and
many have adopted the Leahy Law banning the export of landmines
Stowe Elementary: Meghan
would like to know how long have you been working on banning landmines?
Sen Leahy:
Meghan i have been working on banning them for over 25 years and
every year we have some successes. We also use the Leahy War Victims
Fund in dozens of countries around the world to help those injured by
mines.
Stowe Elementary: Paige
would like to know why are gas prices so high and how can that change?
Sen Leahy:
Paige we have to develop alternative fuels, have cars that get a
LOT better mileage and cut our use dramatically or prices will stay
high.
Stowe Elementary: Sarah
would like to know has anything been done to help the animals that were
victims of Katrina?
Sen Leahy:
Sarah the help for animals has been mostly by volunteer groups
Stowe Elementary: Dylan
would like to know what your favorite food is?
Stowe Elementary:
Katelyn would like to know what your favorite type of music is?
Sen Leahy:
We are about to start a very important vote on electronic spying
on the Senate floor and as soon as it starts i will have to leave. I
have time for one more questions and i have been very impressed by the
quality of the questions. You are great students and must have wonderful
teachers
Sen Leahy:
Dylan my maternal grandparents came to Vermont from Italy and i
have always liked Italian food and Katelyn i have everything from the
Grateful Dead to Opera on my IPod!

like to know about what can and will be done to help stop deforestation?
Sen Leahy:
The vote has started and i apologize but have to leave.
