[EES] Hello From E.E.S
[PatLeahy] Good to be with you - any questions?
[EES] Did you read the book?
[PatLeahy] I have it here and have gone thru it - good to see a Vermont author.
[EES] We are concerned about nuclear power
[PatLeahy] That is a good concern - but we have know that Vermont gets a lot of its electricity from nuclear power.
[PatLeahy] What is important that we keep constant safeguards in place on nuclear power and keep enforcing the safeguards.
[PatLeahy] How many are there in your class and how many in the room now?
[EES] There are 24 in our room. We are a 4/5 multiage class.
[PatLeahy] For some reason your picture is not coming thru now but it is still pretty exciting to be able to talk with you.
[PatLeahy] When i was your age growing up in Montpelier we didn't have anything like this.
[EES] we can see you but you seem to be frozen
[PatLeahy] I think we may fix that.
[EES] Good!
[PatLeahy] Is it working now?
[EES] We had problems with our computers because of an ice storm
[PatLeahy] I went up thru many parts of Vermont with Sen Jeffords to see the damage and than went back with my daughter and some of the people from my office
[PatLeahy] The damage was terrible but I was very proud of all the Vermonters working together.
[EES] How old is your daughter?
[PatLeahy] I have a section on my home page that talks about the damage and I have told President Clinton about it.
[PatLeahy] She is 30 years old and works at Trinity college. She was about your age when I first got elected to the Senate.
[EES] What's your most favorite thing to do in the Senate?
[PatLeahy] Is my picture working up there? If it is I will move the camera around and show you my office.
[EES] The picture is not moving but we can see you
[PatLeahy] I like the debates and meeting with Vermonters who come down here. There is always something interesting going on and I read several hundred pages of reports every day.
[PatLeahy] Your picture just changed and I can see you all - you look GREAT
[PatLeahy] Kyla I saw your sign and Kerry's
[EES] you still are not moving
[PatLeahy] Now I will show you some of my office. Just realized than was Kasey and David. I misread it. Saw Curtis too.
[EES] your picture is still frozen
[EES] we are unable to see your office
[PatLeahy] We have Vanessa Kittell from Fairfield Vermont working here and I was trying to show you her too. Some day some of you may want to work in Washington.
[EES] Is Vanessa a student? what does she do?
[PatLeahy] She was a student at BFA and than in Oregon. Now she is helping me carry out my Senate duties.
[EES] Are you still working on Land Mine issue?
[PatLeahy] Yes I am. I want to see the world without landmines. I continue to work with people in the United States and around the world.
[EES] As Vermonters we are proud of Jody Williams
[PatLeahy] We should be proud of her and all those who worked with the International Campaign to Ban landmines. I have worked with her, the late Princess Diana and Sister Janice Ryan from Fairfield Vt.
[EES] Please tell us if there is something we can do to ban landmines
[PatLeahy] I see someone holding up a sign . Can you hold it closer to the camera?
[PatLeahy] Your whole class could send a letter to President Clinton asking him to work with me to ban landmines.
[PatLeahy] I saw the sign and HI back to you!
[EES] We will do this today right after we sign off
[PatLeahy] Thank you and I do appreciate it.
[EES] Will we be on your web page? Please visit Mrs.Hardy's class soon
[PatLeahy] Yes you will be on the page later today - hope you get a chance to see it.
[PatLeahy] I would like to visit Mrs. Hardy's class. I think she does a great job teaching you.
[EES] Yes she does
[EES] Will you have time to read Phoenix Rising
[PatLeahy] Yes - will try to read it this weekend. I am familiar with the story though and know how sad it is.
[PatLeahy] I am glad it is fiction
[PatLeahy] I have to leave now for a meeting that has already started but I do thank you for letting me be with you today .
[EES] We don't want it to happen to anyone
[PatLeahy] It won'e.
[PatLeahy] please excuse any of my typos - meant to say it won't
[EES] thank you for your time we appericiate this so very much
[PatLeahy] Bye!
[EES] We have to go write to President Clinton
