Teamwork and Awards
In Washington, making sensible policies for the
National Guard requires close coordination among the Administration,
Congress, private associations, and the Guard. Sen. Leahy works closely with a
number of critical people and organizations. By far the most important
person is the Vermont Adjutant General,
Brigadier General Michael Dubie,
who is responsible for keeping the Green Mountain Boys ready for any
emergency. He has provided outstanding, energetic, and inspiring
leadership to the National Guard. We talk frequently about how things
are going with the Guard in Vermont and Washington, DC.
Sen. Leahy also closely coordinates with the Office of the
Secretary of Defense, as well as the National Guard Bureau which
organizes the activities of the state National Guard units. Such
private, national associations as the National Guard Association and
the Enlisted Association of the National Guard work hand-in-hand with
Sen. Leahy. He finds they provide excellent information and bring extensive
experience to the legislative process. |
Sen. Leahy was humbled to be honored by the leaders and ranks of the Guard for
his
efforts in Congress to strengthen the Guard. In February 2001, the
Adjutants General of the United States awarded him the George Washington
Freedom award, while the Enlisted Association of the National Guard
honored Sen. Leahy with the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Award in March 2002. Each
recognized the strong partnership we have established in promoting a
strong Guard.
Overall, Sen. Leahy is extremely proud to fight for the Vermont
National Guard in the U.S. Senate, because the Guard embodies the spirit
of service that has always been a hallmark of Vermonters.
